Charles DeSassure is a recognized leader in cybersecurity education and implementation. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Cybersecurity Program at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas. He also contributed to Rose State College in Midwest City becoming the first community college in Oklahoma to offer a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity. Additionally, he supported the development of a three-year computer science bachelor's degree program at Johnson & Wales University.
Currently, Dr. DeSassure serves as Dean of Instruction at Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont, Texas. In this executive role, he oversees and provides academic direction for the industrial, engineering, manufacturing, and trades programs.
Previously, he served as Dean of the Business and Information Technology Division at Rose State College, where he provided strategic oversight for programs including Accounting, Business Administration, Cybersecurity, Computer Information Technology, Economics, Multimedia Communication, Paralegal Studies, and Technical Supervision and Management. His initiatives included implementing Project-Based Learning, expanding articulation agreements, and streamlining prior learning assessments to support student graduation.
Earlier, Dr. DeSassure was STEM Dean at Thomas Nelson Community College (now Virginia Peninsula Community College) in Hampton, Virginia. He managed a wide range of programs including Engineering, Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering Technologies, IT, Computer Science, Automotive, HVAC, Mechatronics, Unmanned Systems, Welding, and Machining. He also developed two certificate programs and improved articulation processes.
Before entering academic administration, he spent 20 years as a department chair and professor of computer science and cybersecurity at Tarrant County College. His earlier career includes three years as a public-school teacher in South Carolina and a decade in the private sector as an IT professional, where he held roles such as MIS manager, systems analyst, LAN administrator, and programmer.
Dr. DeSassure teaches online undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in cybersecurity and computer science across multiple institutions. He holds a doctoral degree in computer science with a specialization in cybersecurity and information assurance from Colorado Technical University, a master’s in information and resources management from Webster University, a bachelor’s in business administration management from Claflin University, and an associate’s in computer technology from Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.
He also earned a graduate certificate in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and completed professional development programs including the Harvard University Management Development Program (MDP), Stanford University Advanced Computer Security Program, Project-Based Learning Institute at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, North Texas Consortium Leadership and Renewal Academy (CLARA), and the University of Central Oklahoma Educators' Leadership Academy (ELA). He is a Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP).
